First Green Saturday Poster

In the fall of 2015 long-time friends, Mary Medellin (Vegans From Mars) and German Rivera (LB Vegan), decided to collaborate in a cruelty-free and vegan market pop-up. The idea was to go against the consumerism of Black Friday sales by inviting indie shops, artists, brands and food vendors to participate in a holiday marketplace called Green Saturday. The first event took place on Saturday, November 28th in an old German beerhall in Torrance, CA, and included over twenty vendors.

The event proved to be popular, so German and Mary decided to do another one on Valentine’s Day, and then again on Mother’s Day. Each event would get bigger with several of them featuring more than fifty vendors, and some reaching close to 900 people in attendance. Since then, the event has moved to the city of Long Beach, and the duo has curated a cruelty-free marketplace for Eat Drink Vegan, the biggest vegan event in Southern California. The Green Saturday team has also expanded to include several pop-ups all across Los Angeles, including a Vegan Social in Long Beach, VegPop in Gardena, an annual vegan chili cook-off, and Vegtoberfest.

With vegan pop-ups becoming a common occurrence on a weekly basis in the Los Angeles area, is clear to see that the Green Saturday duo helped kick the trend off almost four years ago.

Giving Back

Green Saturday has been giving back since day one. When we decided to do our first event we made a conscious decision to give a portion of the event’s profits to an animal welfare non-profit. The Whiskers & Tails Foundation has been a huge part of all our marketplace events.

Founded on February 1, 2005 by Lynne Amano, a vegetarian, their primary mission is to rescue dogs, cats, to assist needy pet owners, to educate the general public on the humane treatment, and care of all animals.

The organization’s goal is to prevent animal cruelty, and make their lives better while with us. They continue to form relationships with local animal shelters, rescue groups, individuals, volunteers, city, county organizations and supporters. One of their programs assists senior citizens with their companion animals by finding temporary pet housing, while the owner is hospitalized, in recovery, or permanent homes in cases of the owner’s terminal illness, or death.

Whiskers & Tails Foundation believes in spaying and neutering of all animals, especially feral cats. They rescue barnyard animals, and educate the public on backyard wildlife.
